The recent Syrian migration crisis reached its peak when the photograph of a migrating child, Aylan Kurdi, washing up at a shore, took the world by storm and created a global outrage. In response to this significant international moment, Egyptian Billionaire and philanthropist Naguib Sawiris expressed his wish to buy a Mediterranean Island and move all the migrants to the island. Naguib said that he would provide jobs and support to the migrants so that they could peacefully settle into their new land and not be “treated and used like cattle“.
Naguib Sawaris is being lauded by people around the world for his bold and innovative actions, although some people maintain that wealthy people and nations in the region should have acted sooner. Sawaris tweeted saying “Greece or Italy sell me an island, I’ll [declare] its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country.” He intends to name the island Llan, in honor of Aylan Kurdi, who tragically lost his life during the crisis.
