Students In North Dakota Set Up Their Telescope, Police Arrive Thinking It’s A Rifle

Two North Dakota college students were going about their own business and setting up a telescope in their yard. However, as they were setting it up to enjoy their evening looking at the stars, they got blinded by a bright light — it was the police and these officers thought the telescope was a rifle.

According to the Yakima Herald, the two students, Levi Joraanstad and Colin Waldera thought it was some other students pranking them when the police showed up and shined their spotlight on them.

Not only did the Officer who was on patrol that night think that the students had a rifle instead of the telescope that it actually was, he also thought the dark sweater that Joraanstad was wearing was a tactical vest because of the lettering on it and due to it being dark in color. Because of this, he called for backup and the police officers confronted the two students.

The only thing the police officers can say about this mistaken incident is that it is “better safe than sorry.”
