A 46-year-old woman has had a tumor the size of a breast growing on her back for the past decade. The unnamed woman arrived at a Dublin clinic where doctors examined the 19 cm-long non-cancerous growth. A Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was performed on the tumor after doctors feared it could be cancerous. However, tests disclosed that it was actually a lipoma, a benign tumor of fatty tissue, which is non-cancerous and generally harmless.
Dr Tunde Abdulsalam, said that the growth on the right-hand side of the woman’s back was firm to the touch. He further added that it was the biggest he had ever seen and nearly all lipomas are normally soft and small. Lipomas occur more often in individuals aged between 40 and 60 years. Currently, the woman is on a waiting list to have the massive tumor removed.
